When and what options do I have to sign up for a Medicare Health plan?
Qualified individuals have 3 different enrollment periods to sign up for Medicare:
- (IEP) Initial Enrollment Period 3 months before after birthday months
- (GEP) General Enrollment Period January 1 " March 31st
- (SEP) Special Enrollment Period Anytime during the year if the individual or / their spouse is still employed and covered under a group help plan
Here are the main times beneficiaries can enroll in a Medicare health plan:
1. Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): When you first become eligible for Medicare, you have an Initial Enrollment Period that lasts for seven months. It begins three months before the month you turn 65 (or become eligible due to disability) and ends three months after the month you turn 65. During this period, you can sign up for Medicare Part A and/or Part B, as well as choose a Medicare health plan, such as a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan or a Medicare Prescription Drug (Part D) plan.

3. Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP): From January 1 to March 31 each year, there is a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. During this period, individuals who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan can make certain changes. You can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan, switch from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare, or join a standalone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (if you are switching from a Medicare Advantage plan that doesn't include drug coverage).

- Moving out of your plan's service area.
- Losing employer or union coverage.
- Qualifying for Extra Help (Low-Income Subsidy) for prescription drug costs.
- Being eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid.
- Having a 5-star Medicare Advantage plan available in your area.
- During a Special Enrollment Period, you can make changes to your Medicare coverage outside of the standard enrollment periods.
