Does Medicare work outside of the USA?

Neither Medicare nor Medicare Advantage can generally be used outside the United States unless you have a Medigap Supplement that covers out-of-country emergency treatments.

Medicare Supplement Insurance (allowing some form of hospital insurance) may provide limited coverage for medically necessary services that are received while traveling outside of the United States.

This coverage is generally limited to emergency care or services that are needed as a result of a medical emergency.

Beneficiaries who are living abroad may be able to enroll in Medicare Part B Overseas Travel through Original Medicare, or a Medigap Supplement policy.

While Medigap Supplements may provide some limited coverage for healthcare services received outside of the United States, it's important for beneficiaries to carefully review their coverage options and consider purchasing additional insurance coverage for travel or extended stays abroad.
