What is the Medicare Deductible?

The Medicare deductible is a set amount that Medicare beneficiaries must pay out-of-pocket for healthcare services before their Medicare coverage begins to pay for those services. The Medicare deductible is an important part of cost-sharing for Medicare beneficiaries, and it can affect the amount they pay for healthcare services throughout the year. The Medicare deductible refers to the amount of money you must pay out of pocket for covered healthcare services before Medicare starts to pay its share. Medicare has separate deductibles for different parts of the program:

    1. Medicare Part A deductible: This deductible applies to Medicare Part A, which covers hospital services. The benefit period begins when you are admitted to a hospital or skilled nursing facility and ends when you have been out of the hospital or skilled nursing facility for 60 consecutive days. It's important to note that the Part A deductible applies to each benefit period rather than on an annual basis. In traditional Original Medicare (Parts A and B), there are separate deductibles for each part.

    2. The benefit period for Medicare Part A starts the day a beneficiary is admitted to a hospital or skilled nursing facility and ends when they have not received inpatient care for 60 consecutive days. The Part A deductible applies to each benefit period, so beneficiaries may be responsible for paying the deductible multiple times in a twelve-month period.

    3. The Medicare Part B deductible applies to most medical services, including doctor's visits, lab tests, and outpatient therapy services. Once the deductible has been met, beneficiaries typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for these services.

    4. Medicare Part B deductible: This deductible applies to Medicare Part B, which covers medical services such as doctor visits, outpatient care, and durable medical equipment. After you have met the Part B deductible, Medicare typically pays 80% of the approved amount for covered services, and you are responsible for the remaining 20%.

Some Medicare Advantage and Medigap Supplement plans may offer additional coverage for deductibles; beneficiaries should carefully review their plan options to find the coverage that best meets their needs.
