MEDICARE GLOSSARY

What is the Medicare Initial Enrollment period (IEP)?

The Medicare Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is the seven-month period when you can first enroll in Medicare. It begins three months before the month of your 65th birthday and ends three months after the month of your 65th birthday. During your IEP, you can enroll in Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and/or Part B (medical insurance). If you are already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits, you will be automatically enrolled in Part A and Part B during your IEP.

If you miss your IEP, you may be subject to a late enrollment penalty if you enroll in Medicare later. The penalty applies to Part B premiums and increases the longer you go without enrolling in Part B. However, if you are still working and have employer-sponsored health coverage, you may be able to delay enrollment in Part B without penalty.

During your IEP, you can also enroll in other parts of Medicare, such as Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D). It's important to understand the different parts of Medicare and how they work, so you can make informed decisions about your coverage.

If you miss your IEP, you may still be able to enroll in Medicare during the General Enrollment Period (GEP), which runs from January 1 to March 31 each year. However, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty, and your coverage will not start until July 1 of that year.

Your Initial enrollment period begins and ends with the following:

    1. A 7-month period, 3 months before the month of your birthday and 3 after your 65th birthday, is when you can enroll in Part B (Medical). This is called the Initial Enrollment period (IEP)

If you're late enrolling in Medicare Part B, you must pay a permanent late enrollment penalty to enroll in Medicare Part B.
