What is a Medigap Supplement Plan A?
Medicare Supplement Plan A, also known as Medigap Plan A, is a type of Medicare Supplement insurance plan offered by private insurance companies. This plan is designed to help cover some of the costs that Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) do not cover, such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. Medicare Supplement Plan A is the most basic Medigap (supplement) plan available and provides the least amount of coverage compared to the other Medigap plans. It covers the following benefits:
- Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted.
- Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment covers the first three pints of blood needed for a transfusion.
- Medicare Supplement Plan A does not cover other Medicare out-of-pocket costs, such as the Part A deductible, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, or Part B excess charges. If you want additional coverage for these costs, you may need to consider a different Medigap plan, such as Plan F or Plan G.
It's important to note that Medicare Supplement plans are only available to those who are enrolled in Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) and cannot be used with Medicare Advantage plans. Additionally, the cost and availability of Medicare Supplement plans may vary by state and by insurance company. Medigap plans, also known as Medicare Supplement Insurance plans, work alongside Original Medicare (Medicare Parts A and B) to provide additional coverage for certain out-of-pocket costs. Medigap plans are standardized and labeled with letters from A to N. Each plan letter offers a specific set of benefits. These plans are offered by private insurance companies and can help cover expenses such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments that are not fully covered by Original Medicare.
Medigap Plan A is one of the standardized Medigap plans available. It provides a basic level of coverage, including:
