Is there a fixed Medicare enrollment period?
It's important to note that while there are specific dates for each enrollment period, the rules and requirements for each period can change from year to year. It's always a good idea to speak with an AHIP and G-2-certified, state-licensed Medicare representative to ensure you have the most up-to-date information about Medicare enrollment periods.
- Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): This is the first time you can enroll in Medicare, which is typically around your 65th birthday. It starts three months before your 65th birthday month and ends three months after your birthday month.

No Charge, No Obligation! Call us anytime! - Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) Annual Enrollment is sometimes referred to as Open Enrollment. This is the time each year when you can make changes to your Medicare coverage. It runs from October 15 to December 7.
- Open Enrollment Period (OEP): This is a period when you can switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another, or from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare. Open Enrollment Period (OEP) runs from January 1 to March 31.
- Special Enrollment Period (SEP): This is a period when you can enroll in Medicare outside of the IEP or AEP, if you have a qualifying life event, such as moving to a new area or losing your employer-based coverage. There are several Special Enrollment Periods (SEP) that are available.
You move out of your current zip code or moved to a new address that's still in your plan's service area and you have new plan options in your new location.
- If you move to another address where your current Medicare Advantage isn't available. You can switch to a new Medicare Advantage plan or or Medicare Drug plan.
- If you're in a Medicare Advantage Plan and you move outside your plan's service area, you can also choose to return to Original Medicare. If you don't join a new Medicare Advantage Plan during the time explained below, you'll be enrolled in Original Medicare when you're disenrolled from your old Medicare Advantage Plan.
- If you tell your plan before you move, your chance to switch plans begins the month before the month you move and continues for 2 full months after you move.
- If you tell your plan after you move, your chance to switch plans begins the month you tell your plan, plus 2 more full months.
