MEDICARE ANSWERS

I forgot to pay my Medicare premium, will my Medicare policy lapse?

If you forget to pay your Medicare Advantage premium, your coverage may be terminated if the payment is not received within a certain timeframe. The specific timeframe can vary depending on your plan, but it is typically a grace period of one to three months. During this grace period, you will still have coverage, but if the premium is not paid by the end of the grace period, your coverage may be terminated. If your Medicare Advantage coverage does lapse, you may have the option to enroll in a different Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare.

However, there may be restrictions and limitations to changing plans outside of the enrollment periods, so it's important to stay up-to-date on your premiums and payment deadlines to avoid any lapses in coverage.

It's also worth noting that if you are receiving financial assistance to help pay for your Medicare Advantage premium, such as through the Medicare Savings Program, the rules around payment and termination may be different.
