MEDICARE ANSWERS

What does medicare cover?

Original Medicare is a federal health insurance program that primarily covers people who are 65 or older, as well as people with certain disabilities and those with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Medicare coverage is divided into four parts:

    1. Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance): Part A covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and home health care.

    2. Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance): Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment and supplies.

    3. Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage): Part C is an alternative to Original Medicare Parts A and B and stand-alone Part D prescription drug coverage. Advantage plans are offered by CMS-approved Insurance Carriers who are private insurance companies that contract directly with CMS/Medicare.

    4. Advantage plans provide all of the coverage of Original Medicare Parts A and B and may also include additional benefits such as Part D prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, hearing, and wellness benefits.

    5. Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Part D covers prescription drugs and is also offered by private insurance companies that contract directly with Medicare.

  • Medicare Part D is optionally integrated with Medicare Advantage plans.

Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage Part C covers a wide range of medical services and supplies, including but not limited to:

  • Doctor visits
  • Hospitalization
  • Lab tests
  • X-rays and other imaging services
  • Mental health services
  • Prescription drugs (with Part D)
  • Preventive services (such as flu shots and cancer screenings)
  • Durable Medical equipment and supplies (such as wheelchairs and walkers)
  • With many Medicare Advantage third-party carriers (insurance companies), ancillary benefits such as vision, dental, and wellness benefits are included as incentive benefits.
It's important to note that original Medicare or Medicare Advantage plans do not cover all health-related expenses. For example, neither program covers long-term care or cosmetic surgery. It's also very important to note that neither Original Medicare Parts A and B nor Medicare Advantage Part C plans still require Part B premiums, any deductibles, copays, and coinsurance to be paid by the beneficiary.
