MEDICARE GLOSSARY

TTY refers to a teletypewriter

The acronym TTY stands for teletypewriter. It is a device used for communication by individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability. A TTY is a specialized device that allows individuals to type messages back and forth, which are then transmitted over a phone line or other communication network. TTY devices typically include a keyboard and display screen and may also have features such as built-in modems or amplifiers to enhance communication quality. TTY devices can be used to communicate with other TTY users or with individuals who do not have a TTY device by using a relay service.

TTY devices have been largely replaced by newer technologies, such as text messaging and video calling, but they are still used by some individuals who prefer the tactile experience of typing or who do not have access to other communication methods.

The acronym TTY refers to a TTY (teletypewriter) used as a communication device and used by people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have severe speech impairment. People who don't have a TTY can communicate with a TTY user through a message relay center (MRC). An MRC has TTY operators available to send and interpret TTY messages.
