What are the most popular Medicare Supplemental Plans?

It's important to note that Medigap supplement plans F and C are no longer available for new enrollees. Beneficiaries who already have these plans can keep them. It's also important to note that CMS guidelines and mandated coverages for all Medigap supplements and plans can change on an ongoing basis. The following Medigap plan comparisons should only be used as a general overview and not as current regulations for your particular area or state.

Medigap Plan A:

  • covers Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted.
  • covers Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment.

Medigap Plan B:

  • covers everything that Plan A covers.
  • Additionally, it covers the Medicare Part A deductible.

Medigap Plan D:

  • covers everything that Plan A covers.
  • Additionally, it covers skilled nursing facility coinsurance and the Medicare Part A deductible.

Medigap Plan G:

  • covers everything that the discontinued Plan F covered (except the Part B deductible).
  • Has become a popular alternative to the discontinued Plan F due to its comprehensive coverage.

Medigap Plan K:

  • covers Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to 50% after you meet the Part A deductible.
  • covers Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayments up to 50%.
  • Limits out-of-pocket expenses annually.

Medigap Plan L:

  • covers everything that Plan K covers (with different cost-sharing percentages).
  • limits out-of-pocket expenses at a lower level than Plan K.

Medigap Plan M:

  • covers everything that Plan D covers.
  • Additionally, it covers 50% of the Medicare Part A deductible.

Medigap Plan N:

  • covers everything that Plan D covers.
  • Additionally, Medicare Part B coinsurance is covered, except for the deductible and certain copayments of up to $20 for doctor's office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits.

The majority of people who purchase Medicare Supplements do so in order to pay little or nothing for out-of-pocket costs for medical treatments. In 1999, Medicare combined Medicare Choice with many of the Original Medicare supplements and Part D prescription drugs. That combined coverage became the predecessor of today's Medicare Advantage (MAPD) plans. Medicare Advantage plans are required to offer at least the same level of coverage as Original Medicare but often include additional ancillary benefits, such as prescription drug coverage (Medicare Part D), dental, vision, and hearing services, and may also include "Silver Sneakers" programs for wellness and multiple gym memberships.
