MEDICARE GLOSSARY
Medicare Special projects, pilot programs or research studies.
Special projects, sometimes called "pilot programs" or "research studies," test improvements in Medicare coverage, payment, and quality of care. They usually operate only for a limited time, for a specific group of people, and in specific areas. Medicare approved special projects, demonstrations, pilot programs, and research studies are initiatives that are designed to test new healthcare delivery and payment models or to evaluate the effectiveness of existing programs. These programs are typically approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and may involve collaboration with healthcare providers, researchers, and other stakeholders.
Some examples of Medicare approved special projects, demonstrations, pilot programs, and research studies include:
- Medicare Advantage Value-Based Insurance Design Model: This model tests the effectiveness of providing targeted benefits and reduced cost-sharing for beneficiaries with certain chronic conditions.
- Medicare Care Choices Model: This model allows beneficiaries with advanced illnesses to receive supportive care services from hospice providers while still receiving curative treatment.
- Independence at Home Demonstration: This demonstration tests the effectiveness of providing home-based primary care services to beneficiaries with multiple chronic conditions.
- Accountable Health Communities Model: This model tests the effectiveness of addressing beneficiaries' health-related social needs, such as housing or food insecurity, to improve health outcomes.
- Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program: This program provides beneficiaries at high risk for developing diabetes with coaching and support to help them make lifestyle changes to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes.
