Skilled nursing facility (SNF)

A skilled nursing facility is a nursing institution that is equipped with the personnel and resources necessary to provide skilled nursing care, as well as, many times, skilled rehabilitation services and other related health services. These services include daily professional nursing care and therapeutic services offered in a skilled nursing facility. Physical therapy or intravenous injections, which can only be administered by a physical therapist or a trained nurse, are examples of treatment provided in skilled nursing facilities.

Medicare Part A covers skilled nursing facility (SNF) care for eligible beneficiaries. SNF care is typically provided to individuals who require daily skilled nursing or rehabilitative care due to a medical condition, injury, or illness.

To be eligible for SNF care under Medicare Part A, you must have been admitted to a hospital for at least three days and require daily skilled care that cannot be provided in a less intensive setting. Additionally, you must enter a Medicare-certified SNF within 30 days of your hospital discharge.

Medicare Part A covers a variety of SNF services, including:

• Semi-private room
• Meals
• Skilled nursing care
• Physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and occupational therapy services
• Medical social services
• Medications and medical supplies
• Ambulance transportation (when other transportation endangers health)
• It's important to note that Medicare Part A only covers up to 100 days of SNF care per benefit period. After 20 days, a daily coinsurance amount may apply.
