MEDICARE GLOSSARY

Rehabilitation services

Rehabilitation services are health care services that assist you in retaining, regaining, or enhancing abilities and daily functioning that you have lost or have had hindered due to illness, injury, or disability. These services could include speech-language pathology, physical and occupational therapy, and mental rehabilitation in a range of inpatient and/or outpatient settings. Medicare covers rehabilitation services for eligible beneficiaries. Rehabilitation services are designed to help individuals recover from an illness, injury, or surgery and improve their ability to function and perform daily activities. Rehabilitation services covered by Medicare may include:

  • Physical therapy: This type of therapy is used to help patients regain strength, mobility, and range of motion after an injury or surgery.
  • Occupational therapy: This type of therapy is used to help patients regain the ability to perform activities of daily living, such as dressing, bathing, and cooking.
  • Speech therapy: This type of therapy is used to help patients improve their ability to communicate and swallow, particularly after a stroke or other neurological condition.
  • Cardiac rehabilitation: This type of rehabilitation is designed for individuals who have experienced a heart attack or other cardiac event and may include exercise, education, and counseling.
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation: This type of rehabilitation is designed for individuals with lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and may include exercise, education, and counseling.
To be eligible for Medicare-covered rehabilitation services, the patient must have a medical condition that requires rehabilitation, and the services must be medically necessary and provided by a qualified healthcare professional. Additionally, the patient must receive the services from a healthcare provider who accepts Medicare assignments. The amount of coverage for rehabilitation services may vary depending on the patient's specific needs and the type of Medicare plan they have.
