Point-of-service option for Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO's)
A point-of-service (POS) option is a type of health plan that is sometimes available as an add-on to Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs). With a POS option, HMO members are typically given more flexibility in choosing their healthcare providers, beyond the network of providers available through the HMO. In a POS plan, members typically have a primary care physician (PCP) within the HMO network who is responsible for coordinating their care. If the member needs to see a specialist or receive care outside of the HMO network, they may be required to obtain a referral from their PCP.
However, with a POS option, members may be able to see providers outside of the HMO network without a referral, but at a higher cost-sharing rate than in-network services.
This plan choice allows you to pay an extra fee in a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) health insurance plan to use medical professionals outside the network.
