Per CMS, the two main ways to get Medicare Health Coverage
Posted November 5, 2023Medicare coverage in the United States can generally be obtained in two main ways:
Original Medicare (Parts A and B):
1. Part A (Hospital Insurance): Part A covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care services. Most people do not have to pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse have paid Medicare taxes while working.
2. Part B (Medical Insurance): Part B covers doctor's services, outpatient care, preventive services, and some medical supplies. Beneficiaries typically pay a monthly premium for Part B.
Medicare Advantage (Part C):
1. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans, sometimes called "Part C," combine the benefits of Part A and Part B and often include prescription drug coverage (Part D) as well as additional benefits like vision, dental, and wellness programs. Medicare Advantage plans may have different costs, coverage rules, and provider networks compared to original Medicare.
In addition to these two main ways, there is also:
Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage):
1. Part D plans are stand-alone prescription drug plans offered by private insurance companies and are offered with Original Medicare. These plans help cover the cost of prescription medications.
2. Medicare beneficiaries can choose between Original Medicare (Parts A and B) with or without a Part D plan, or they can opt for a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) that often includes prescription drug coverage.
