MEDICARE ANSWERS

I've heard of Medicare Part K, what is it?

Medicare Part K is a supplement health policy available to Original Medicare beneficiaries and covers 100% of the Part A hospitalization coinsurance plus 365 days of coverage following the termination of Medicare benefits. 50% hospice coinsurance coverage under Part A 50% of Medicare-eligible costs for the initial three blood pints. The Original Medicare Supplements, also known as Medigap Plans, are standardized by Medicare / the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

As a result, a Plan K offered by one company offers many of the same advantages as a Plan K offered by a different company. The history of rate increases and financial ratings, will differ, and that is something that a beneficiary should pay attention to and place value on, before they commit to a particular Carriers offering.

Medicare Supplement Plan K, also known as Medigap Plan K, is one of the standardized Medicare Supplement insurance plans available to beneficiaries in the United States. Medigap plans are designed to work alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and help cover some of the out-of-pocket costs that Medicare does not fully pay for.

Medicare Supplement Plan K provides the following coverage:

  • Medicare Part A Coinsurance and Hospital Costs: Plan K covers 100% of the Part A coinsurance and hospital costs for an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted.
  • Medicare Part B Coinsurance or Copayment: Plan K covers 50% of the coinsurance or copayment for Medicare Part B services and supplies.
  • Blood: Plan K covers 50% of the cost of the first three pints of blood needed in a calendar year.
  • Hospice Care Coinsurance or Copayment: Plan K covers 50% of the coinsurance or copayment for Medicare-covered hospice care.
  • Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Care Coinsurance: Plan K covers 50% of the coinsurance for SNF care provided under Medicare Part A.
  • It's important to note that Plan K has an out-of-pocket limit, which is the maximum amount beneficiaries are responsible for paying in a calendar year. Once the out-of-pocket limit is reached, Plan K covers 100% of Medicare-approved costs for the remainder of the year.
  • However, Medicare Supplement Plan K does not cover the Medicare Part B deductible, Part B excess charges, or any foreign travel emergency care expenses. These costs would need to be paid out of pocket or covered by other means.
It's advisable to review the specific coverage details and costs associated with Medicare Supplement Plan K, as they can vary between insurance companies. Additionally, Medicare Supplement plans may have different availability depending on the state in which you reside. Consulting with a licensed AHIP-certified insurance professional or visiting the official Medicare website: Medicare.Gov can provide more specific and up-to-date information about Plan K and other available Medigap plans.
