MEDICARE GLOSSARY
Medicare Eligibility Age
If you are already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits when you turn 65, you are typically automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. You will receive your Medicare card in the mail. The age at which you become eligible for Medicare benefits depends on your individual circumstances. Here are the general age requirements for Medicare:
1. Medicare or Medicare Advantage eligibility at Age 65:
- Most people become eligible for Medicare at age 65. This is the age when many Americans qualify for Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Medicare Part B (medical insurance).
- You can apply for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period, which includes the three months before the month you turn 65, the month you turn 65, and the three months after the month you turn 65.
2. Medicare Eligibility for Younger Individuals:
- Some individuals may qualify for Medicare before age 65 if they have certain disabilities. If you have been receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) disability benefits for 24 months, you may become eligible for Medicare.
- Individuals with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) can qualify for Medicare regardless of their age.
3. Medicare Eligibility for those Receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Benefits:
- It's important to note that while most people are eligible for Medicare at age 65, you are not automatically enrolled unless you are already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits. If you are not automatically enrolled, you must proactively apply for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period to avoid potential late enrollment penalties.
- Additionally, Medicare eligibility rules can change over time, so it's advisable to check with the Social Security Administration or the official Medicare website for the most up-to-date information regarding Medicare eligibility based on your specific circumstances.
