What is a Medicare Cost plan?
A Medicare Cost Plan is a type of Medicare health plan available in certain areas of the United States, such as certain counties in the following states: Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. It is a hybrid plan that combines the features of both Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Original Medicare (Parts A and B). Cost plans are not as commonly available as other types of Medicare plans, such as Medicare Advantage or Original Medicare. Here are some key points about Medicare Cost Plans:
1. Coverage Options: Medicare Cost Plans typically provide coverage for both Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). They may also offer additional benefits beyond what Original Medicare covers, such as prescription drug coverage (Part D), vision, dental, or hearing benefits.
2. Provider Networks: Unlike traditional Medicare Advantage plans, Cost Plans do not have a set network of providers. Instead, they work on a "cost-sharing" model, where beneficiaries can see any healthcare provider who accepts Medicare assignment and agrees to treat Cost Plan members. This means beneficiaries have the flexibility to see any provider who accepts Medicare, even if they are not in-network for the plan.
3. In-Network vs. Out-of-Network Coverage: Medicare Cost Plans have different rules regarding in-network and out-of-network coverage. When receiving care from an in-network provider, the plan's cost-sharing rules apply. However, when receiving care from an out-of-network provider, the plan may still provide some coverage, but the cost-sharing amounts may be higher.
4.Enrollment and Discontinuation: Medicare Cost Plans have specific enrollment periods. In areas where Cost plans are available, beneficiaries can join a Cost Plan during the initial enrollment period or annual election period. If a Cost Plan decides to discontinue its contract with Medicare, beneficiaries will receive a notice and have a Special Enrollment period to choose a new Medicare health plan.
