Original Medicare Benefit period means:
A Medicare benefit period refers to the period of time during which a beneficiary is eligible for coverage under Medicare Part A for inpatient hospital care. Each Medicare benefit period begins on the first day of a hospital stay and ends when the beneficiary has been out of the hospital or skilled nursing facility for 60 consecutive days. Original Medicare measures your use of hospital and skilled nursing facility (SNF) services in relation to the time it takes for treatments.
A benefit period begins the day you're admitted as an inpatient to a hospital or skilled nursing facility (SNF). The benefit period ends when you haven't gotten any inpatient hospital care (or skilled care in a SNF) for 60 days in a row. If you go into a hospital or a skilled nursing facility (SNF) after one benefit period has ended, a new benefit period begins. You must pay the inpatient hospital deductible for each benefit period.
During a benefit period, Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing care, and hospice care, as well as certain home healthcare services. However, beneficiaries may be responsible for paying deductible and coinsurance amounts during each benefit period.
If a beneficiary is hospitalized again after the end of a benefit period, a new benefit period will begin, and the beneficiary will need to pay a new deductible and coinsurance amount. There is no limit to the number of benefit periods a beneficiary can have.
It is important for Medicare beneficiaries to understand the Medicare benefit period and their coverage under Medicare Part A. Beneficiaries should review their Medicare coverage regularly and be aware of any changes in their benefits or out-of-pocket costs.
