Medical Healthcare underwriting and Medicare
The process by which an insurance company decides whether to accept your application for insurance, whether to add a waiting period for pre-existing conditions (if your state law allows it), and how much to charge you for that insurance based on your medical history Medical underwriting is generally not used in Medicare. Unlike private health insurance, Medicare is a federal health insurance program that provides coverage to eligible individuals regardless of their health status or pre-existing conditions.
Medicare is a social insurance program that is funded through payroll taxes and premiums and is designed to provide health insurance to people over the age of 65, as well as to individuals with certain disabilities and people with end-stage renal disease. When enrolling in Medicare, individuals are generally not subject to medical underwriting or medical history questions. They are guaranteed the right to enroll in Medicare during their initial enrollment period or during other designated enrollment periods, regardless of their health status.
However, there are some situations where medical underwriting may be used in Medicare, such as for certain types of Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare Part C.
Some Medicare Advantage plans may require medical underwriting for individuals with certain health conditions or pre-existing conditions in order to enroll in the plan.
Medicare supplement insurance, also known as Medigap, may also require medical underwriting in certain situations, such as when enrolling outside of the initial enrollment period or when switching to a different Medigap plan.
