Is Medicare part B deductible Medigap coverage available?

PER CMS, Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans sold after January 1, 2020, third-party insurance companies are not allowed to offer coverage for the Medicare Part B deductible.

This change is due to the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015, which phased out the sale of Medigap Plans C and F, the two plans that previously offered coverage for the Part B deductible.

If you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, and you purchased a Medigap Plan C or F before that date, you can keep your plan and continue to receive coverage for the Part B deductible. If you were eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020, you cannot purchase a Medigap Plan C or F that covers the Part B deductible.

However, other Medigap plans may offer some coverage for Part B coinsurance and copayments, which can help you with out-of-pocket costs. Medigap Plans K and L, for example, cover a percentage of Part B coinsurance and copayments, while Plans A, B, C, D, G, M, and N offer varying levels of coverage for these costs.

There is a Medicare Part B deductible. Once you meet the deductible, you typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for most doctor services and outpatient therapy.

It's important to note that Medicare Advantage plans (which are an alternative to Original Medicare + Medigap + Part D prescription drug coverage) may also offer different levels of coverage for Part B coinsurance and copayments, as well as other out-of-pocket costs. There may be "give-back" amounts on certain Medicare Advantage Plans.

Medicaid: If beneficiaries have limited income and resources, they may qualify for Medicaid, a joint federal and state program that helps with healthcare costs. Medicaid may cover the Part B deductible as well as other costs associated with Medicare.

It's important to note that as of 2023, Medigap plans do NOT cover the Part B deductible, and the cost and coverage of each plan may vary depending on the insurance company and your location. Before enrolling in any plan, it's important to review the plan's benefits and costs to ensure that it meets your specific healthcare and financial needs.
