Is any part of Medicare free?
The majority of beneficiaries who are eligible for Original Medicare Part A (hospitalization) do so without having to pay a premium. While some parts of Medicare do not require a monthly premium, no part of Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage is completely free. Here is a breakdown of the costs associated with each part of Medicare:
1. Medicare Part A (hospital insurance): Most people do not pay a premium for Medicare Part A Coverage because they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. However, there are some situations where you may have to pay a premium for Part A, such as if you did not work long enough to qualify for premium-free Part A or if you choose to enroll in Part A during a Special Enrollment Period.

2. Medicare Part B (medical insurance): Most people pay a monthly premium for Part B, which is based on their income. Beneficiaries may pay more or less based on their income level and if they qualify for State administered Extra Help or Low subsidies (LIS).
3. Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage): Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies and may charge a monthly premium in addition to the Part B premium. That premium requirement depends on the beneficiary area and the specific Medicare Advantage plan. Not all Medicare Advantage plans have a premium. Here are some Medicare Advantage 2023-2024 Patient Statistics
4. Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage): Medicare Part D stand-alone plans are also offered by private insurance companies and charge a monthly premium in addition to the Part B premium. The premium can vary depending on the plan you choose and your income. Read more about Medicare PART D Deductible
5. Many Medicare Advantage plans do not charge a deductible for prescription drug coverage, but some do. It depends on the individual carrier and the plan. Read about differences between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare.
In addition to any monthly premiums, there may be other costs associated with Ways to Apply for Medicare or Medicare Advantage plans, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. There are programs available to help low-income beneficiaries with some of these costs, such as the Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help for Prescription Drug Costs.
