MEDICARE ANSWERS

If I'm accepted in a medicare advantage plan, how long does it take?

The enrollment process can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on the plan and the method you choose to enroll. If you enroll online or by phone, it's a good idea to contact your licensed and qualified health insurance agent when you're interested in getting more information about the Medicare enrollment process and timeline. Advantage plans technically have up to 10 days to notify the potential beneficiary, but it normally doesn't take 10 days.

    1. Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): This period runs from October 15th to December 7th each year. If you enroll during this time, your coverage will start on January 1st of the following year.

    2. Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): This is the seven-month period that starts three months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and ends three months after your 65th birthday. If you enroll during this period, your coverage will typically start on the first day of the month after you enroll.

    3. Special Enrollment Period (SEP): If you have a qualifying life event, such as moving to a new area, losing your current health coverage, or experiencing a change in your income, you may be eligible for a special enrollment period. The start date of your coverage will depend on the specific circumstances of your situation.
