If your group prescription plan is cancelled, when can you enroll in Medicare Part D?

If a group prescription plan is cancelled, it can trigger a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) for individuals to enroll in a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) plan. The duration of the SEP in this situation is 63 days from the date the group prescription plan coverage ends. During this SEP, individuals who had group coverage can enroll in a standalone Medicare Part D plan or switch to a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage. It's important to note that the 63-day SEP starts from the date the group prescription plan coverage ends, not the date the cancellation notice is received.

It is advisable for individuals who experience the cancellation of their group prescription plan to act promptly and enroll in a new Medicare prescription drug plan within the 63-day SEP window. Failing to do so may result in late enrollment penalties and a gap in prescription drug coverage, and individuals may have to wait until the next Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) to enroll in a Medicare Part D plan unless they qualify for another SEP due to a different circumstance.
