MEDICARE ANSWERS

What if I was covered for prescription drugs by my job's group plan?

You may still get prescription drug coverage through Medicare Part D. However, if you didn't enroll in Medicare Part D when you were first eligible, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty unless you had creditable prescription drug coverage through your job's group plan.

Creditable coverage means that your group plan provides coverage that is at least as good as standard Medicare Part D coverage.
  • If your job's group plan provides creditable coverage, you will be able to enroll in Medicare Part D during a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) without incurring a late enrollment penalty. You have a two-month special enrollment period (SEP) that starts the month your group coverage ends to enroll in a Medicare Part D plan.
  • If you enroll in a Medicare Part D plan during this SEP, your coverage will begin on the first day of the month after you enroll.
  • Keep in mind that you can only enroll in a Medicare Part D plan during certain enrollment periods, such as the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from October 15 to December 7 each year or during a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) triggered by a qualifying event.
It's important to note that if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage (known as Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug, or MAPD), you will not be able to enroll in a separate stand-alone Medicare Part D plan. It won't be necessary.
