I have Cobra coverage, can buy Medigap Coverage?

If you have COBRA coverage, you can either buy a Medigap policy right away or wait until the COBRA coverage ends. Medigap coverage, also known as Medicare Supplement Insurance, is a type of private insurance that helps pay for some of the costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

If you have Cobra coverage and are also eligible for Medicare, you can still buy Medigap coverage. However, it's important to note that you cannot use both Cobra coverage and Medigap coverage at the same time. You can only use one or the other to pay for your healthcare expenses.
  • To enroll in Medigap coverage, you must first enroll in Original Medicare. You cannot have a Medicare Advantage Plan and a Medigap/Supplement. Once you have enrolled in Original Medicare, you can then purchase a Medigap Supplemental policy from a private insurance company.
  • Keep in mind that you have a limited window of time to enroll in a Medigap Supplemental policy without being subject to medical underwriting, so it's important to enroll as soon as you are eligible. This would be your Initial Enrollment Period.
  • You can apply for a Medigap policy no later than 63 calendar days after the latest of these three dates:
  • Date the creditable coverage ends.
  • Date on the notice you get telling you that creditable coverage is ending.
  • Date on a claim denial, if this is the only way you know that your coverage ended.
  • Your rights may last for an extra 12 months under certain circumstances, but don't count on it.
