How long does my Medicare Part A cover Home Health Care?

Medicare Part A also covers home health care services for eligible beneficiaries. Home health care services are designed to help individuals recover from an illness or injury in the comfort of their own homes. To be eligible for Medicare-covered home health care services, you must:

  • Be under the care of a physician who has ordered home health care services for you.
  • Be homebound, which means leaving your home is difficult and requires the assistance of another person or medical equipment.
  • Need skilled nursing care or therapy services on a part-time or intermittent basis.
  • Medicare Part A covers a range of home health care services, including:

  • Skilled nursing care provided by a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN).
  • Home health aide services are provided by a certified nursing assistant (CNA) to assist with personal care such as bathing, dressing, and toileting.
  • Physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and occupational therapy services are provided to help you regain strength and independence after an illness or injury.
  • Medical social services provided by a social worker to help with social and emotional needs, long-term planning, and community resources.
  • Durable medical equipment: such as wheelchairs, walkers, and hospital beds.
    • It's important to note that home health care services must be provided by a Medicare-certified home health agency. Additionally, there may be limitations on the number of visits and services that are covered, so it's important to check with Medicare or your home health agency to understand your coverage.
