MEDICARE GLOSSARY

How does State Pharmaceutical Assistance Program (SPAP) help Medicare?

State Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs (SPAPs) are programs that provide assistance to eligible individuals with the cost of prescription drugs. These programs are typically administered by state governments and are designed to help individuals who are enrolled in Medicare, as well as those who are not eligible for Medicare but have high prescription drug costs. The State Pharmaceutical Assistance Program (SPAP) is a state-sponsored program that provides help paying for drug coverage based on the patient's financial need, age, or medical condition.

SPAPs provide a range of assistance to Medicare beneficiaries, including:

  • Help with paying for Medicare Part D premiums, deductibles, and copayments
  • Assistance with paying for prescription drugs that are not covered by Medicare Part D
  • Assistance with paying for prescription drugs during the Part D coverage gap, also known as the "donut hole".
  • Coordination with Medicare and other insurance plans to ensure that beneficiaries receive the maximum available assistance with prescription drug costs
  • State Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs (SPAPs) may have different eligibility criteria and benefits depending on the state and program. Beneficiaries can contact their state's SPAP office or visit the Medicare website to learn more about the programs available in their area.
