MEDICARE GLOSSARY

What is a Home health agency?

A home health agency is a healthcare organization that provides skilled nursing care, therapy services, and other healthcare services to individuals in their own homes. Home health agencies are licensed and regulated by the state and federal governments and can provide a range of services, including wound care, medication management, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.

Home health agencies are typically used by individuals who have an illness, injury, or disability that requires ongoing medical care and assistance, but who prefer to receive that care in the comfort of their own home. Home health agencies can also provide support to family members and caregivers who may need assistance with caring for their loved one.

In order to receive care from a home health agency, a physician must first order the services and determine that the individual meets the requirements for home health care under Medicare or other insurance programs. To some extent, home health services are covered by Medicare and other insurance programs, although coverage may be limited based on specific eligibility criteria, location, and other factors.

Home health agencies can provide an important service for individuals who require ongoing medical care and assistance but would prefer to receive that care in their own homes.
