MEDICARE GLOSSARY

HMO Physician Referral

A formal request by your physician for you to go see a specialist and/or receive specific medical services in writing from your primary care physician before you may receive medical care from anyone other than your primary care physician, you frequently need a recommendation from another health maintenance organization (HMO) Primary Care Physician (PCP). The plan can refuse to cover the costs of the services if you don't initially acquire a recommendation from your PCP.

Whether or not you need a physician referral with a Medicare Advantage PPO plan depends on the specific HMO plan's rules and guidelines.

With a Medicare Advantage PPO plan, you typically have more flexibility to choose healthcare providers both inside and outside of the plan's network, and you generally don't need a referral to see a specialist. However, it's important to review your plan's rules and guidelines to understand the specifics of your coverage.

To determine whether you need a physician referral with your Medicare Advantage HMO or PPO plan, it's best to review the plan's "Summary of Benefits and Coverages," which outlines the specifics of your coverage, or to contact the plan directly for more information.
