Health Insurance Marketplace
A service that assists people in finding and enrolling in affordable health insurance. For most states, the federal government operates "the marketplace,", which can be found at HealthCare.gov. Several states operate their own "marketplaces.".
The Health Insurance Marketplace (also known as the "Marketplace" or "Healthcare Exchange") facilitates health plan shopping and enrollment via websites, call centers, and in-person assistance.
The Health Insurance Marketplace was established under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to provide a place where individuals who are not eligible for Medicare can compare and enroll in private health insurance plans.
While individuals who are eligible for Medicare are not able to use the Health Insurance Marketplace to enroll in health insurance, they may still be able to enroll in other programs, such as Medicaid or Medicare Savings Programs, which provide assistance with Medicare costs based on income and other factors.
