Healthcare providers
Medicare is a federal health insurance program that provides health coverage to people who are 65 years of age or older, individuals with certain disabilities, and people with end-stage renal disease. Medicare does not provide health care directly but rather works with health care providers to cover eligible medical services.
Health care providers that participate in the Medicare program can include doctors, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, and hospice care providers, among others. These providers must be enrolled in Medicare in order to bill Medicare for covered services provided to Medicare beneficiaries.
Medicare covers a wide range of health care services, including hospital care, doctor visits, preventive services, prescription drug coverage, and more. The specific benefits and coverage amounts provided by Medicare depend on the type of Medicare plan an individual is enrolled in, such as Original Medicare (Parts A and B), Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) and Original Medicare Supplemental Plans.
To find a Medicare health care provider, individuals can use the Medicare.gov "Physician Compare" tool to search for doctors and other health care providers who accept Medicare. They can also contact their local Medicare State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for more information and assistance in finding Medicare providers in their area.
