MEDICARE ANSWERS
When is the Medicare General Enrollment period (GEP)?
Medicare general enrollment occurs each year between January 1 and March 31. During this period, individuals who did not enroll in Medicare during their initial enrollment period can enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B. If an individual fails to enroll in Medicare during their initial enrollment period and also misses the general enrollment period, they may face a late enrollment penalty. The late enrollment penalty for Part A is 10% of the monthly premium for twice the number of years that an individual could have had Part A but did not enroll.
The late enrollment penalty for Part B is 10% of the monthly premium for each full 12-month period that an individual could have had Part B but did not sign up. The penalty may continue for as long as the individual is enrolled in Part B.
