Is Extra Help available for approved Medicare prescription drug plans?

Extra Help is a federal program that helps Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries with limited income and resources pay for their prescription drug costs. The program is also known as the Low-Income Subsidy (LIS).To be eligible for Extra Help, a beneficiary must be enrolled in Medicare Part D and meet certain income and resource limits. For 2022, the income limits are $19,320 for individuals and $26,130 for married couples living together. The resource limits are $15,980 for individuals and $32,720 for married couples living together. Extra Help provides assistance with paying for the premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance associated with Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage. Beneficiaries who qualify for Extra Help may pay little or no premiums, deductibles, or coinsurance for their prescription drugs.

To apply for Extra Help, beneficiaries can complete an application with the Social Security Administration (SSA) or their State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). The application will require information about income, resources, and current prescription drug coverage.
