MEDICARE GLOSSARY

Excess charges to Medicare

A Medicare Excess Charge is an additional fee that may be charged by healthcare providers who do not accept Medicare assignments. When a healthcare provider accepts a Medicare assignment, they agree to accept the Medicare-approved amount as full payment for their services. Some healthcare providers may choose not to accept Medicare assignments and may charge up to 15% more than the Medicare-approved amount for their services. This additional amount is known as a Medicare Excess Charge, and it is the responsibility of the beneficiary to pay this additional expense.

It's important to note that not all healthcare providers are allowed to charge Medicare Excess Charges. Only providers who do not accept Medicare assignments can charge this fee. Additionally, some Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plans may provide coverage for Medicare Excess Charges, so beneficiaries should carefully review their coverage options and choose a plan that provides the coverage they need at a cost that fits their budget.

While Medicare Excess Charges are not common, they can result in higher out-of-pocket costs for beneficiaries who receive care from non-participating providers.

It's recommended that beneficiaries check with their healthcare providers and Medicare representatives to ensure that they understand their coverage options and potential costs before receiving healthcare services.
