MEDICARE GLOSSARY

End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is a condition in which the kidneys have lost function to the point where they can no longer adequately filter waste and excess fluids from the blood. ESRD is the final stage of chronic kidney disease, and it typically requires ongoing treatment, such as dialysis or kidney transplantation.

ESRD can be caused by a range of factors, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases. Symptoms of ESRD can include fatigue, swelling, changes in urination patterns, and difficulty concentrating.

Because ESRD is a chronic and potentially life-threatening condition, Medicare provides coverage for eligible beneficiaries who require ongoing dialysis or kidney transplantation. Medicare coverage for ESRD includes dialysis treatments, kidney transplantation, and other related healthcare services and supplies.

It's important for individuals with ESRD to work closely with their healthcare providers and Medicare representatives to ensure that they understand their coverage options and receive the care and support they need to manage their condition effectively.
