MEDICARE GLOSSARY

Durable power of attorney (POA)

A Health Care Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document that allows you to appoint someone to make medical decisions on your behalf in the event that you are unable to do so yourself. This person is called your agent, and they are responsible for making decisions that are consistent with your wishes and values. A healthcare POA can be used in a variety of situations, such as if you are unconscious, in a coma, or have a serious medical condition that makes it difficult for you to communicate your wishes. Your agent can make decisions about your medical treatment, including whether to authorize or refuse medical procedures, treatments, or interventions.

When creating a Health Care POA, it's important to choose someone who you trust to make decisions that are consistent with your wishes and values. It's also a good idea to talk with your agent about your wishes for medical treatment and to document these wishes in an advance directive or living will.

A Health Care (POA) is an important legal document that can help ensure that your medical wishes are respected and followed in the event that you are unable to make decisions for yourself.

A medical power of attorney is a document that enables a person to appoint someone they trust with their life to make decisions about their medical care. This sort of advance directive may also be called a health care proxy, the appointment of a health care agent, or a durable power of attorney for health care.
