MEDICARE ANSWERS

Do I need to wait for a certain period to change Medigap supplements?

Medigap, also known as Medicare Supplement Insurance, is a type of private insurance that helps cover some of the costs that Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) doesn't cover, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, which often have specific enrollment periods, you can generally apply for or change Medigap policies at any time during the year.

Some important things to know about Medicare Supplement Insurance:

  • Guaranteed Issue Rights: In some situations, you might have guaranteed issue rights, which allow you to buy a Medigap policy outside of your initial enrollment period without being denied coverage or charged higher premiums due to pre-existing conditions. These situations could include things like losing employer or retiree coverage, certain changes in residence, or if your current Medigap insurance company goes bankrupt or otherwise leaves the market.
  • Underwriting and Pre-existing Conditions: If you apply for a Medigap policy outside of your initial enrollment period or guaranteed issue rights, the insurance company might subject you to medical underwriting. This means they can consider your health status and may charge you more or deny you coverage based on pre-existing conditions.
  • Open Enrollment Period: The best time to enroll in a Medigap policy is during your open enrollment period, which begins on the first day of the month that you're both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this 6-month period, insurance companies are generally required to sell you a Medigap policy regardless of your health condition. They also can't charge you higher premiums due to your health.
  • State Regulations: Keep in mind that some states might have additional regulations or rules regarding Medigap policies that could affect when you can enroll or switch plans. It's a good idea to check with your state's insurance department to get accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Plan Availability: The availability of Medigap plans can vary depending on your location and the insurance companies operating in your area. While you can generally apply for or switch Medigap policies throughout the year, it's important to note that some insurance companies might offer certain plans only during specific times or under certain circumstances.

It's always recommended to research and plan ahead when considering changes to your Medigap coverage. You can also reach out to a licensed insurance agent or your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for personalized assistance and guidance related to Medigap enrollment and switching.
