MEDICARE GLOSSARY

What does Creditable coverage with Medigap or Supplement mean?

Creditable coverage is a term used in the context of health insurance, including Original Medicare Parts A, B, and D, Medicare Medigap, or Supplement insurance, also known as Medigap. Creditable coverage refers to any prior health insurance coverage that a Medicare beneficiary has had that meets certain minimum requirements set by the federal government.

To be considered creditable coverage for Medicare purposes, the prior health insurance coverage must provide benefits that are similar to or better than those provided by a standard Medigap plan, Original Medicare Parts A, B, and D, or a Medicare Advantage (Part C) health plan. This includes coverage for hospitalization, medical services, and prescription drugs, among other things.

If a beneficiary has had creditable coverage for a certain period of time (generally at least 6 months) without a gap in coverage for over 63 days, they may be eligible to enroll in a Medigap plan without being subject to medical underwriting. This means that they can enroll in a Medigap plan at any time, regardless of their health status, without being charged higher premiums due to pre-existing conditions.

These terms refer to previous health insurance coverage that can be used to shorten a pre-existing condition waiting period under a Medigap policy or prescription drug coverage (for example, from an employer or union) that's expected to pay, on average, at least as much as Medicare's standard prescription drug coverage. People who have this kind of coverage when they become eligible for Medicare can generally keep that coverage without paying a penalty if they decide to enroll in Medicare prescription drug coverage later.

Creditable coverage is an important concept to understand for Medicare beneficiaries who are considering enrolling in a Medigap plan, as it can affect their eligibility and costs for coverage.
