Clinical breast exam

Clinical breast exams are a physical examination of either a female's or male's breasts done by a healthcare provider, such as a doctor or nurse practitioner. People may want clinical breast exams for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Breast cancer screening: Clinical breast exams can help detect any lumps or abnormalities in the breast tissue, which may be an early sign of breast cancer. Regular breast exams can help detect breast cancer early, when it is most treatable.
  • Personal history of breast cancer: Women who have had breast cancer in the past may want regular clinical breast exams to monitor for any signs of recurrence or new breast cancers.
  • Family history of breast cancer: Women with a family history of breast cancer may want to have regular clinical breast exams to monitor for any signs of the disease.
  • Breast pain or other symptoms: Women who experience breast pain, tenderness, or other symptoms may want a clinical breast exam to determine the cause of the symptoms and rule out any underlying medical conditions.

Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and some Medicare supplements offer breast cancer screening benefits.
