Can I enroll in Medicare if I'm single 65 and only worked for cash?
You may be able to enroll in the Medicare program even if you worked "off the books" and did not pay Medicare taxes.
If you are 65 or older and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you are generally eligible to enroll in Medicare Part A, which provides coverage for hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, and some home health care services. You may also be eligible to enroll in Medicare Part B, which provides coverage for doctor visits, outpatient care, and other medical services, but there may be a premium for this coverage based on your income.
If you did not pay Medicare taxes during your work history, you may still be able to enroll in Medicare by paying a premium for Part A coverage. The amount of the premium will depend on how many years of Medicare taxes you have paid during your work history. If you do not have at least 10 years of Medicare-covered employment, you may need to pay a higher premium for Part A coverage.
It is important to note that you cannot enroll in Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) or Part D (prescription drug coverage) if you do not have Part A and/or Part B coverage.
