MEDICARE ANSWERS

Can I change my Medicare plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)?

The AEP typically occurs from October 15th to December 7th each year. During this period, you have several options for making changes to your Medicare coverage:

1. Medicare Advantage (Part C) Plans:
  • You can switch from Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) to a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C).
  • You can switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
  • You can disenroll from your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare.
2. Prescription Drug Plans (Part D):
  • You can enroll in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan if you didn't have one before.
  • You can switch from one Part D plan to another.
  • You can disenroll from your Part D plan if you have drug coverage through another source (e.g., employer or union) or if you want to return to Original Medicare without prescription drug coverage.
3. Medigap (Medicare Supplement) Policies:
  • You can apply for a Medigap policy, which can help cover some of the out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare (if you meet eligibility requirements).

Note that while you can apply for a Medigap policy at any time, you may face medical underwriting and potentially higher premiums if you apply outside of your Medigap Open Enrollment Period (which is typically the six months following your enrollment in Part B). 4. Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period (MADP):

  • From January 1st to February 14th each year, there is a Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period. During this period, you can leave your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare. You can also enroll in a standalone Part D prescription drug plan if needed.
It's important to review your current Medicare coverage, including your healthcare needs and prescription drug requirements, during the AEP. You may want to make changes based on your evolving health or financial circumstances. Be sure to compare the plans available in your area, including premiums, coverage, networks, and drug formularies, to choose the plan that best suits your needs.

Any changes you make during the AEP generally take effect on January 1st of the following year. Keep in mind that there may be other special enrollment periods throughout the year for specific circumstances, such as moving to a new area or experiencing certain life events.
