MEDICARE ANSWERS
Can an Medicare OEPI Beneficiary change plans any time of the year?
Yes, an OEPI (Other Enrollment Periods for Institutionalized Individuals) Medicare beneficiary may have the opportunity to enroll, change plans, or disenroll at various times of the year. OEPI beneficiaries are individuals who reside in an institution, such as a skilled nursing facility or long-term care facility.
Here are some instances when an OEPI Medicare beneficiary may have the opportunity to make changes to their Medicare coverage outside of the regular enrollment periods:- Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): When an individual first becomes eligible for Medicare, they have an Initial Enrollment Period to enroll in Medicare Part A, Part B, and Part D. This period typically occurs around their 65th birthday.
- Special Enrollment Period (SEP): OEPI beneficiaries may qualify for Special Enrollment Periods throughout the year. These periods allow them to enroll in or change Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D plans due to certain life events, such as moving out of the institution or losing their current coverage.
- Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period (MADP): The Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period, which occurs annually from January 1st to February 14th, allows OEPI beneficiaries enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan to disenroll from the plan and return to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). During this period, they can also enroll in a standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.
- Institutional Special Needs Plan (I-SNP): OEPI beneficiaries may have the opportunity to enroll in a specialized Medicare Advantage plan called an Institutional Special Needs Plan (I-SNP). These plans are designed specifically for individuals living in institutions and offer tailored benefits and coordination of care.
- Changes in Institutional Status: If an OEPI beneficiary's institutional status changes, for example, when they move into or out of an institution, they may have the opportunity to enroll, change plans, or disenroll outside of the regular enrollment periods. This allows them to adjust their Medicare coverage based on their new living situation.
It's important for OEPI beneficiaries to understand their specific circumstances and consult with a licensed insurance agent to determine the available options and any applicable enrollment periods.
