MEDICARE ANSWERS

Are there any residence requirements to receive Medicare benefits?

There are residency requirements to receive Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage benefits. The prerequisites for residency to receive Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage benefits include being a resident of the United States; being a citizen of the United States, or being an alien resident who has been legitimately admitted for permanent residence and has lived in the United States continuously for five years prior to the month of applying for Medicare.

To be eligible for Medicare, you must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal resident who has lived in the United States continuously for at least five years. If you do not meet these requirements, you may not be eligible for Medicare benefits.

In addition, Medicare coverage is generally limited to services that are provided within the United States, although there are some exceptions for emergency care, Medicare Supplements, and possibly other situations. If you are planning to travel or live outside the United States for an extended period of time, it is important to understand how your Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and prescription drug coverage are affected. Coverage may be affected, and you should know what your options are for obtaining healthcare coverage while abroad.
