What is an Advance directive?
Also known as the Advanced Medical Directive. A patient supplied a document stating exactly how you want they're medical decisions to be made if they lose the ability to make them for themselves. This may include a living will and a durable power of attorney for health care. It is furnished to the Hospitals to follow the patient's wishes in cases of possible terminal illnesses, comas, etc.
An Advance Directive is a legal document that outlines an individual's preferences for medical treatment and end-of-life care in the event that they become unable to make decisions for themselves. Advance Directives can include several different types of documents, such as a living will, a durable power of attorney for healthcare, or a do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order.
A living will is a document that specifies an individual's wishes regarding medical treatment if they become terminally ill or permanently unconscious and are unable to communicate their preferences. This document typically includes instructions about life-sustaining treatments such as mechanical ventilation, artificial nutrition and hydration, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
A Durable Power of Attorney for healthcare is a document that designates an individual to make healthcare decisions on behalf of the person who created the document in the event that they are unable to do so. This document can provide guidance to the designated individual about the individual's preferences for medical treatment and end-of-life care.
A do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order is a medical order that indicates that a person does not want to receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in the event of cardiac or respiratory arrest.
Advance Directives are important because they ensure that an individual's preferences for medical treatment and end-of-life care are respected, even if they are unable to communicate those preferences themselves.
It is important for individuals to discuss their wishes with their healthcare providers and loved ones and to create an Advance Directive to ensure that their preferences are documented and followed. Medicare beneficiaries should consider Advance Directives before a health event occurs.
